Why Are Indoor Rabbit Cages Better than an Outdoor Rabbit Hutch?
Although there are certain benefits in keeping rabbits housed in outdoor hutches (who doesn’t love fresh air and sunshine?), there remain some environmental, and even psychological, stress that can adversely affect your sensitive pet. Some experts claim that you can double your rabbit’s 
life span by affording them with snug indoor rabbit cages. So despite the obvious appeal of keeping them in a natural outdoor environment, consider the risks before you make any decisions.
Outdoor predators are a tremendous risk. The obvious calamity would be a physical breach of your hutch by a sly raccoon or feral cat. Remember that a determined predator (or an agile one), is capable of breaking wire and even unlatching doors.
In some cases rabbits, since they are so highly sensitive as creatures, may actually die from shock if they are threatened. Personally I lost several rabbits in outdoor hutches to a dog that had gotten out of his yard. Not a pretty sight to see.
Chemical and toxic elements can invade your rabbit’s cage. If your yard or neighboring properties are maintained through fertilizers and pesticides, these toxins can leach into your rabbit’s system. Where I live now, I even have to worry about aerial sprays. In the current trend of going green and organic in order to maintain our own health as humans, it seems cruel to subject your beloved pet to those same elements that we fear for ourselves.
Irregularity of maintenance can hurt your pet. Outdoor rabbit hutches are typically harder to maintain due to the greater inconvenience of their locale. Some pet owners tend to get lazy and are not as vigilant about keeping their rabbits’ cages consistently clean and hygienic. Waste material can contribute to unsanitary conditions and bacterial growth. It’s much harder to ignore the integrity of indoor rabbit cages which are in sight and easily accessible.
Physical confinement is harmful to your pet’s well-being. Imagine being trapped with nowhere to run except between the small walls of a wooden box. A depressing existence like this can lead to boredom and overeating. Rabbits have the convenience of free roaming more regularly when they are kept indoors with indoor rabbit cages. They get more exercise and are thus healthier creatures.
Rabbits are social creatures and thrive under a regular diet of companionship and affection, which they are frequently denied when they are left outside. They say no man is an island. Nor is your pet rabbit. Face it. The kids are going to be visiting the indoor rabbit cages a lot and playing with their pets more when they are inside where the children are.
One might think that it is always best to keep a creature close to its natural environment, and though there is a lot to be gained from fresh air, sunlight and the occasional privilege of a grass pen to scamper across, sometimes the nicest thing you can do for your pet is keep it protected under your own roof. It might be as simple as bringing him indoors at night so he can get some restful slumber (and so you can, too). Or you can just look for some nice indoor rabbit cages and keep them close all the time.
