Outdoor Rabbit Hutch
An outdoor rabbit hutch is a great abode for a pet rabbit.
So you have a pet rabbit. Wonderful! Rabbits are beautiful, compassionate, fun animals. Rabbits tend to live long lives and require a lot of care though. Besides the cleaning and feeding, one of
the most important things that a pet rabbit needs is a cage, also called a rabbit hutch. These days, pet owners are realizing that their pets’ natural habitats are outdoors. So, whether you want your pet rabbit to reside in an outdoor rabbit hutch or you just want to take it outside for trips sometimes, outdoor rabbit hutches are a must.
Rabbits like to be free and run around. But rabbit cages are good as a place for them to sleep and rest, or get away from everything else once in a while. An outdoor rabbit hutch can contain litter boxes for potty-trained rabbits if large enough.
There are plenty of good outside rabbit hutches out there. Do not buy a cage that is too small. No matter how inexpensive it is, the cage will not suffice for your pet rabbit.
While a rabbit hutch with a wire bottom will be much easier to clean than any other cage, it can hurt your rabbit’s feet and the rabbit will never feel comfortable. This is something you will have to decide upon and depends a lot upon how you take care of your rabbit and your reasons for having a rabbit or rabbits.
As far as size is concerned with outside rabbit cages, the bigger the better to a certain point. Your pet rabbit will probably spend most of its time inside the hutch unless you are fortunate enough to be able to dedicate a building or even a section of the yard to a rabbit proof enclosure where your rabbit can live when not in your home.
In addition, a two story rabbit cage will work perfectly for adding more space. This type of cage is a popular choice. Just be sure to get one sturdy enough for your rabbit’s eventual size and weight. Also check that the ramps are wide enough and sturdy enough for your pet.
For design, choose an outdoor rabbit hutch that has a solid floor, made of wood, grass or covered with some kind of mat. The mat can literally be made from anything ranging from a blanket to a towel. A pet owner with one, maybe two rabbits, should opt for litter box training the rabbit and using these types of floors. Don’t worry about the cleaning. Pet rabbits litter train fairly easily and should not mess up the floor of the cage. However, like any pet with fur, some eventual cleaning will be necessary
However, if you are raising several rabbits and do not or will not take the time to litter train them, you should opt for a wire floor. This does make the cleaning easier as it allows the urine and feces to drop through the floor. If you instead go with a solid floor with an untrained rabbit, you will end up “burning” the poor things with the urine and feces.
Outdoor rabbit hutches should open and close easily. Cages with a front and side door are optimum. This way, you are never forcing the rabbit into the cage – which is unpleasant for both you and your pet. Rabbits can scratch like the dickens!
Choosing to get an outdoor rabbit hutch for your pet rabbit is a great way of caring for your pet. Rabbits need fresh air, just as all animals do. Your pet rabbit will appreciate the grass and natural scenery you’ll provide, as opposed to the typical indoor setting.
